iPhone 6: New chipset being manufactured

One of Apple’s key component suppliers has started producing chips for this year’s iPhone 6, according to supply chain sources.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reportedly been enlisted to make the entire complement of A8 chips for Cupertino.

Manufacture of the new chipset, which is said to pack quad–core graphics and a quad–core, 64-bit processor, has started earlier than last year’s A7.

It’s rumoured that the shift in timescale will give Apple more flexibility when it comes to a launch date.

Interestingly, but perhaps not entirely surprisingly, TSMC is said to be the sole manufacturer of the A8.

Samsung, which has previously made Apple’s chipsets, has been sidelined, with Tim Cook and co keen to become less reliant on its major smartphone rival for such a vital component.

The iPhone 6 is rumoured to come with a beefed up, 4.5–inch screen, a rejigged metal design and iOS 8, which is due to include a new HealthBook app. It’s expected to launch this autumn.
