Siri: Apple hiring new staff for its speech recognition service

Apple appears to be weaning itself off its reliance on third parties to supply the voice recognition software behind its Siri voice assistant. According to a new report, the company is hiring a whole new team to work on researching speech recognition.

The move comes after it was revealed that Samsung is aiming to snap up Nuance, the company that provides much of the back-end software that keeps Siri ticking.

Abdel-rahman Mohamed, a researcher whom Apple tried to hire, told Wired: “Apple is not hiring only in the managerial level, but hiring also people on the team-leading level and the researcher level.

"They’re building a very strong team for speech recognition research.”

This new team is unlikely to be brought to bear on the recently unveiled iOS 8, which is already edging closer to official release.

However, we could see Apple dump Nuance in favour of its own staff come 2015.
