Super-fast broadband networks are the canals and railways of the 21st century, it has been claimed.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Skipton and Ripon MP Julian Smith explained that fibre broadband and related technologies are making a huge difference to UK communities.
"We are now on the brink of transforming the economic prospects for the northern part of our region," he commented.
Mr Smith commented that the rollout of faster broadband is akin to the creation of national transport links in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Broadband is helping to reconnect communities and improve communication links for homes and businesses, the Conservative MP suggested.
Gary Fielding, Assistant Chief Executive at North Yorkshire County Council, said the region's broadband rollout is "a massive event" which will make "a huge difference to an awful lot of people’s lives".
