Virgin Media and Sky picked up seven of 12 awards at tonight's uSwitch Broadband Awards, at a ceremony dominated by the pay-TV and broadband rivals.
Virgin Media’s haul of three gongs included the prestigious Best Broadband Provider award, which it won for the second year running. Virgin Media will also be making room for the awards for Best Customer Rated Broadband and Fastest Broadband in its trophy cabinet.
Sky swept to four awards, including Best TV Provider, Best Broadband, TV & Home Phone and Best TV Streaming Service for Sky Go. The app and offer of preferential backstage access to events for subscribers also helped Sky overcome strong opposition to nick the prize for Best Customer Benefits.
Other big winners on the night were BT with Best Broadband Innovation for BT Sport – the specialist sports channel that has transformed the UK’s sports broadcasting landscape – and Plusnet with Best Customer Service and Best Value Home Broadband.
EE also made good on its nine-month head start in the nascent 4G market to scoop Fastest Mobile Broadband. uSwitch.com StreetStats data revealed it provided average connection speeds of 5.1Mbps over the past year.
Marie-Louise Abretti, broadband expert at uSwitch.com, said: “Virgin Media and Sky may have come away triumphant, suggesting their customers are the most content, but British broadband – though considered the fourth utility – is by no means perfect with speed, service and cost still top concerns for bill-payers.
“As providers battle ever more fiercely for a bigger bite of the market, and find new ways of setting themselves apart, Brits can take advantage of lower-priced deals, more competitive perks and higher quality service.
Abretti added: “While the big boys took home the lion’s share of awards between them, Plusnet’s two awards are proof that smaller providers shouldn’t be ruled out if you’re not getting the service you want from the broadband giants.
“In fact the market has never been so competitive, and the New Year is the perfect time to spring clean your finances and make sure you’re getting the best broadband deal for you.”
