TalkTalk reassures Tiscali broadband customers
Posted 8th May 2009 at 12:03pm by Jonathan Leggett
The head of TalkTalk’s retail division Carphone Warehouse has moved to reassure Tiscali’s broadband customers that their service will be unaffected by his company’s acquisition of the broadband provider.
Charles Dunstone, chief executive of Carphone, was moved to issue a statement to Tiscali UK’s broadband subscribers after TalkTalk today agreed to acquire the firm for £236 million. Some Tiscali customers are believed to have been concerned that their contract terms may change and that the changeover could lead to some disruption of their service.
Mr Dunstone said: “The most important message for Tiscali customers is that their service will continue and improve. We will make sure you continue to receive the home phone and broadband services you rely on.
“We have created a website at www.talktalk.co.uk/tiscali where Tiscali customers can go for more information on what is happening.”
TalkTalk has also issued advice to Tiscali customers to further ameliorate any other worries they may have regarding their change of broadband provider. This included assurances that they need do “absolutely nothing” in the way of administration because TalkTalk will assume full responsibility for ensuring that the changeover is seamless.
Tiscali has been a takeover target for a number of rival broadband suppliers in recent months. Sky and Vodafone had both held talks with Tiscali, before negotiations stalled over failure to agree a price. Tiscali UK’s Italian parent company is believed to have been seeking around £600 million.
Cheap broadband specialist TalkTalk’s acquisition of Tiscali will result in the creation of the UK’s largest consumer broadband provider in terms of subscriber numbers, with 4.25 million customers.

One obvious question for Tiscali users - does this statement still apply?

Have not been too happy with Tiscali service. Was about to change to Talk Talk anyway, but what about the free phone calls whch go with my Tiscali contract and which, I understand, are not as good as Talk Talk?

But I seem unable to raise the tiscali site to communicate now - is this a problem area ??? -

Well there have been three broadband breakdowns this week. Two resulting in corrupting the AVG scans on my computer. The latest was just this morning. I am not convinced that the first paragraph of the reassurance here holds water!

I have been a tiscali customer for around 6 years. Recent talks over the telephone with them over pricing lead to promises of cheaper broadband for my area from them but their promises came to nothing. (I am paying £36 a month for phone and broadband which is ridiculous these days).

I am now moving to talk-talk - live date next week - who is doing the exact same package for around £10 a month less. It's not a lot, but pays for a good part of my television licence. I just hope I have made a good decision.
As for emails, it is obvious you will lose the tiscali email (it's rubbish anyway), but gain the TT email service. You can also sign up to hotmail and yahoo for those. I use yahoo as my main address for family and friends, and hotmail for the rubbish. They are all free.
If you have a direct debit as we do, just cancel it after the final payment from tiscali has been taken out. Any arguments after that refer them to Talk Talk.
