Some TalkTalk subscribers are been given the opportunity to receive a free speed test worth £50.

According to the broadband provider, around 16 million new gadgets connected to the internet on Christmas Day, putting networks under greater strain.

TalkTalk web traffic trebled last Christmas compared to the previous year, and the firm is expecting a further 25 per cent uplift on December 25th 2011.

"Three-quarters of us will call friends and families this Christmas, while around 60 per cent will check their emails and email loved ones on the day," said Tristia Clarke, Commercial Director at the firm.

"Almost 40 per cent of people say that modern technology has brought their extended families closer together."

And a third feel that even if they are not with their friends and family this Christmas, they still feel a part of the festivities due to Facebook and Skype, Ms Clarke said.

She claimed that with more people going online at Christmas, it is "even more important than ever" that everyone enjoys a great internet experience over the holiday.

This is why TalkTalk has decided to offer free speed optimisation visits to certain customers - enabling them to optimise their internet experience.

A number of different factors can affect the broadband speeds received by customers, such as the distance they are from the local telephone exchange and the type of router they use.

But line quality also makes a difference to download speeds - and this is where the engineers may be able to help.

Ms Clarke explained that the firm's Bright Spark engineers have visited over 1,000 homes so far and helped them get an average speed increase of around 4Mb.

"To find out if you qualify just use the TalkTalk Speed Checker and also get some simple tips on how to improve your in-home set up yourself," Ms Clarke stated.

@Robert Tromans it is very very very unlikely as TalkTalk only currently offer up to 24Mbit

I've been receiving download speeds of only 0.22mps since 6months. I complained several times but still have no change to my service. Oh and the service from talktalk to send an engineer doesn't apply for everyone??

Yes customers in N.Ireland (UK service) don't get assistance, as talktalk have no "brightspark" engineers in the country. Is that stupid or what!

I have just found out that talktalk purchased all of the old BT severs and have installed them in al the bt terminals. BT has upgraded all of their Servers. Talktalk share servers with more customers per server, I have been told 500 for talktalk and 100 customers share BT servers.

These are the reasons that Talktalk customers all say that they get slow speed. I have been informed that Plusnet have just installed brad new servers and that they are limiting their servers to 100/server. Me thinks it time I changed, then at least I can speak to someody who's first language is English.......

I have average of 8.6 Mbps speed in York but am getting a speed optimisation anyway this afternoon and will report how it goes. Talk Talk Broadband has just been upgraded for me yesterday, and I have noticed that BBCi Player was better yesterday on the Wii than before when we couldn't watch it during evenings without interruption.

It will be interesting to see if there is any more the Brightsparks engineer can do. The more speed I get the better with wireless laptop, desktop PC and Wii in the house and usually on at the same time.

I too live in Cornwall and just recently switched to Talk Talk. I tried to run their speed test but it was taking so long that the page timed out with error messages.

I went back in and tried again and this time I eventually got as far as a download speed of 0.12. I still don't know what my upload speed is.

Oh for the good old days of dial up access. It was so much faster.

Talk Talk can never seem to find the problem and keep saying re download speeds that all is okay using thire own check and advising that the line is okay. One person tells you there is a problem but you take this further and the next tells you nothing is wrong.

In terms of speed test I would try a free independant test on line to test the actual speed which is shown as slow but my advice now is if your speed is to slow it's time to go.

Or you could compare cost of their new fibre optic but why pay someone more of your hard earned money who can't deliver the service first time or even after giving them a chance to sort it out on 3 different occasions.

I for one am leaving after 5 years of good service then suddenly bad for a good while now..!!!
