Dial-up nearly dead
Posted 23rd February 2009 at 12:00pm by Alex Buttle
Recently-released data reveals that 95.1 per cent - or 19 in every 20 - internet connections in the UK are now via broadband.
This figure represents a one per cent increase from the 94.1 per cent which was recorded in September last year.
Year-on-year, the number of broadband connections now present in the UK has grown by 4.4 per cent, the new ONS report shows.
The survey of UK ISPs has revealed that there was actually a 0.3 per cent fall in the number of UK internet connections over the last quarter.
It is thought that this could be attributed to the 17.5 per cent fall in dial-up connections which has been recorded.
Since the ONS' index began in 2001, the steady rise of broadband has been charted, as access has grown and prices have fallen.
