When is the right time to switch?

Switching broadband is free if your contract has come to an end. But if you still have some months left on your contract, you'll probably have to pay exit fees in order to cancel your contract early.

Are you still in contract? If so, provide us with your contract end date, and we'll tell you when you can switch without charge.

Look out for deals with an 'early switch credit' promotion – these providers will contribute up to £250 towards any exit fees you're charged if you cancel your current contract early.

    How to save on your next broadband deal

    The right broadband deal for you isn't just the cheapest or fastest available - it's the one that best suits what you and your household use the internet for. The more speeds, providers and promotions you compare, the more certain you'll be that your next one meets your needs without breaking the bank.

    Here are some important tips to help you find what you really need in a new broadband deal:

    1. If you're out of contract, you can switch right now for free

    If your current contract has already ended, you're likely paying out-of-contract prices, which are more expensive than the initial price you agreed to when you signed up.

    However, it also means you can find a new deal immediately, at no additional cost. So this is usually the perfect time to find a better broadband plan.

    2. Sticking with the same provider can be expensive

    Even if you're happy with your service, your price can creep up quite significantly if you keep re-contracting to the same package. We call this a 'loyalty penalty' because providers rarely recontract you to the price you originally signed up for.

    If you're looking to save on your next broadband bill, a new customer deal with a different provider may be a more reliable way to reduce it.

    3. Know what 'value' means to you

    Comparing what each provider offers for the monthly price they charge is a good way to find a deal that matches your budget. However, some offers include promotions that can reduce the total cost of the deal, such as gift vouchers or bill credit.

    Plus, 'value' to you might mean a better internet connection, or superior customer service to your previous provider, even if the cost isn't much lower. So it's important to know what you're comfortable paying for.

    Your current provider may offer decent-value plans to re-contract to, but if you want to ensure you get the best value broadband for your money, you should always browse elsewhere first.

    4. You could upgrade your connection and still reduce your bill

    Faster, more reliable full fibre connections are now available to most UK homes, and they can often be cheaper than what those on older, copper-based connections are paying for.

    So if your household has been struggling with slow, inconsistent broadband, it's worth checking if full fibre deals are now available to you. Full fibre has come down in price a lot in recent years, so you could find a better value broadband deal on a better connection than your current one.

    5. If you watch a lot of TV, bundle it

    If you're currently using a pay TV service from the likes of Sky, EE, or Virgin, it's often cheaper if you bundle your broadband service with these providers. The same goes if you pay for multiple TV streaming services, as some providers include them in their packages as well.

    Compare your current total monthly cost between the two services with the TV and broadband bundles offered by these providers. You could make significant savings.

    6. Don't disregard customer service

    Some providers are considered to have better broadband customer service than others. Many also offer additional ways to strengthen your broadband connection, such as whole-home guarantees or Wi-Fi boosters.

    While it's important to consider value, a poor experience can lead to significant frustration and wasted time fixing issues. We'd suggest you read what customers say about a particular provider's service to ensure you have the full picture before you buy.

    7. If you're moving home, you may need to take action

    Regional broadband providers are challenging the big brands

    The big UK broadband providers are available nationwide, so they usually offer the same packages to everyone (with some regional pricing differences). However, they often aren't the only choice you see when comparing broadband providers.

    There is now a huge number of 'alternative' broadband companies with regional availability across the whole UK. And while they aren't as widely available as the big brands, they offer very reliable full fibre internet, often at lower prices too.

    Many regional providers, such as YouFibre, Trooli, Zen Internet and BeFibre, also guarantee no price increases during your contract, unlike the large providers that put your price up every year.

    One Touch Switch: simpler broadband switching

    Switching broadband providers is now simpler than it has ever been thanks to the recent introduction of the One Touch Switch process. It means you no longer need to cancel your contract with our old supplier if you switch to a different broadband network (such as from BT to Virgin Media, or from a national broadband provider to a regional one). Your new provider will now do that for you.

    This has long been the case when switching between providers on the same network, such as BT to Sky, both of which have Openreach for decades. But covering this extra step means you can upgrade to a new broadband connection with even less hassle than before.

    What type of broadband package should I choose?

    Certain providers let you bundle TV, landline or mobile phone services to your broadband contract, which might help keep your costs down. This could be a good option if you often use a landline or watch pay-TV like Sky.

    Broadband-only deals are a great option if you:

    • Only use TV streaming services like Netflix
    • Want cheap broadband

    Broadband-only deals are straightforward plans for those who just want to get online, while still offering ultrafast speeds if you're after a speedy connection.

    Broadband and home phone

    Broadband and home phone deals are a good option if you:

    • Use your landline daily for calls
    • Make a lot of calls abroad

    The most widely available broadband packages still need a landline to get internet to your property, but there’s no need to pay for a landline service if you don’t need one.

    Broadband and TV

    Broadband and TV bundles can help save money if you:

    • Watch pay-TV channels like Sky Sports, TNT Sports or Sky Atlantic
    • Are currently paying separate providers for broadband and TV

    What happens after I switch broadband?

    Switching providers is often a quick, easy process, and it's almost always worth the short process it takes – especially when you consider the money you could save, or the better experience you could get from a different provider. In fact, you could save £329‡ a year just by signing up to a new contract.

    Here's what happens after you select a broadband deal on Uswitch:

    • Once you've chosen a deal, you'll be taken to the provider's website to sign up for it.

    • Add your address, confirm the deal you want and select any add-ons you'd like.

    • When you sign up, your new provider will display all the charges you should expect to pay during your contract, including your out of contract price when it ends.

    • You can also choose the date you want to start your new contract and activate your connection.

    • After you’ve registered, you'll receive a confirmation email from your provider, allowing you to activate your connection on your chosen date.

    Can I get a low-income broadband social tariff?

    If you receive government financial support like Universal Credit, you could save hundreds of pounds every year with a low-income social tariff.

    Multiple well-known providers offer broadband social tariffs. They give you the same service as a normal broadband connection but for a heavily discounted price. Depending on the provider and speed you choose, they often cost between £12-20 per month.

    If you're on one of these tariffs, you'll also avoid yearly mid-contract price increases, so it's absolutely a worthwhile option if you're looking to reduce your bills.

    70% of eligible households are unaware they can get a discounted broadband social tariff, according to Ofcom¹. So if you're on one of the following financial support schemes, you can likely get access:

    • Universal Credit
    • Pension Credit
    • Jobseeker's Allowance
    • Employment and Support Allowance
    • Personal Independence Payment (some providers do not accept this)
    • Income Support

    How to haggle for a better broadband deal

    While switching providers is one of the more certain ways to save, we understand that if you’re happy with your broadband connection, you should still have options to reduce your bill. That’s where negotiating (or ‘haggling’) with your provider could be useful when your contract comes to an end.

    It’s not a guaranteed way to save, as it depends on what your provider’s customer retention team is willing to offer you, which can vary with each customer they talk to. But many customers have reported success with this method.

    Here are our tips for haggling to get a better deal from your current provider.

    • Prepare in advance: Find two or three deals from other providers that offer the same speed as your package at lower prices. New customer deals are often cheaper than re-contract offers, but it shows you have a plan if you don’t reach an agreement.
    • Go straight to the retention team: Ask to speak to the "cancellations" or "customer retention" department for the best discounts.
    • Be firm, but polite: State clearly that you are prepared to leave unless they can match or beat the deals you've found.
    • Find value elsewhere: If they won't lower the price, ask for extra benefits instead, like a speed upgrade or bill credit.
    • Wait for the best offer: Don't accept the first discount. Politely ask, "Is that the absolute best you can do?"

    Which types of broadband connection are in my area?

    There are different types of broadband available in the UK depending on where you live. Here are the most common ways you can get broadband in your area.

    Full fibre

    Full fibre (or fibre to the premises) connects fibre cables directly to your property. It provides a strong, ultrafast connection with speeds starting at 50Mbps and currently reaching up to 3Gbps (3000Mbps). It's currently available to around 78% of the UK.

    Part-fibre

    Part-fibre (or fibre to the cabinet) broadband is available in 98% of the country. It offers speeds between 30 and 70Mbps and used to be the most used type of broadband in the UK, before full fibre recently expanded to the majority of UK homes.

    Cable (Virgin Media)

    Virgin Media cable broadband is a separate fibre-optic network run independently by Virgin. It was providing ultrafast speeds to over 60% of UK homes long before full fibre was, and has upgraded its top speed to over 2Gbps in recent months.

    Satellite broadband

    Satellite broadband is an option for people in more rural areas of the UK. Companies like Starlink allow rural homes to get online via a satellite dish at speeds similar to normal broadband.

    Mobile broadband

    4G/5G mobile internet is often used as a backup option to normal broadband, but it can also be relied on for home broadband. It's a great option for homes that can't access fibre.

    Copper ADSL

    Copper ADSL is the oldest and slowest type of broadband in the country. It offers 10Mbps average speeds to 99% of the UK through the Openreach copper phone lines.

    What is my current broadband speed?

    You can find your internet speed at any given time by running a broadband speed test. Just ensure you’re at home and connected to your Wi-Fi router.

    Our broadband speed test will report the download and upload speeds you’re currently experiencing on your current package. You can use that result to compare it against broadband deals that match (or beat) your current speed.

    Just be mindful that internet speed constantly changes, as it’s affected by how much data is travelling at any given period. So one test might not give a clear view of the speed you usually get. That’s why providers advertise packages with average speeds, which they measure over a longer period.

    Can't remember the speed you selected when you signed up? You can find this by checking a recent bill, signing into your online account or asking your provider directly.

    What’s the fastest broadband in my area?

    The fastest broadband speed in your area will depend on which broadband types are available at your home. For example, full fibre offers much faster speeds and more reliability than older types of broadband, and its coverage across the UK is almost nationwide.

    Over 80% of UK homes have access to either full fibre or Virgin Media's ultrafast network. Part-fibre speeds will still likely be fast enough for many households, but the connection quality is less consistent than full fibre, which doesn't rely on old copper cables.

    Full fibre is often available for the same price as part-fibre these days too. So if it’s available to your home, you could still opt for an entry-level speed but enjoy a lot more consistency with your connection.

    What can affect your broadband speed?

    Many things can affect your broadband speed at any given moment. Some depend on the location of your home, others on the types of connections available to you. But others are things you could improve yourself. Here are some examples:

    1. The type of broadband you have

    Different types of broadband offer different levels of speed and reliability. Fibre broadband is generally faster and more dependable than copper internet. The most widely available fibre connections still use copper to reach your home, but full fibre is now available to around three-quarters of UK homes.

    2. Your distance to the nearest broadband exchange or cabinet

    If you have a part-fibre, part-copper connection, your connection may be slower than your package’s advertised speed if your home is more than 1.5km from its nearest street cabinet. Plus, if you're still on a full-copper connection, your speed may be limited even further if your home is more than four miles from your provider's nearest broadband exchange.

    However, this won't be an issue if you have full fibre broadband because this slowdown doesn't occur on fibre-optic cables.

    3. Where your Wi-Fi router is

    If you've got slow internet, changing your home setup could help. You may just need to move your router to a better area of your house or flat.

    To get the most out of your router’s Wi-Fi signal, place it in a central, open part of your home and keep it away from objects and devices that might block its signal.

    4. The time of day

    The busier the internet is, the slower it tends to be.

    When more people use their Wi-Fi during peak times (around 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.), the strain on the network increases. The peak in internet traffic can mean slower speeds for each household in your area.

    It also mostly affects copper broadband connections more than fibre because fibre cables can handle much more data in any given time period. Full fibre connections are therefore far less affected by neighbourhood internet traffic.

    Why is broadband speed advertised as an 'average'?

    Since broadband speed can be affected by so many other factors, you won't always get the advertised speed on your broadband package all the time. The speed you see when browsing deals is an average reading the provider has measured over a certain period.

    To be advertised correctly, average speeds are measured during peak hours of the day (8 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and must be available to at least 50% of users in the area.

    Can I get fibre broadband?

    You likely can get fibre broadband in some form, since part-fibre is available nationwide, and full fibre now covers about three-quarters of UK homes.

    Do I need to cancel my old broadband?

    You likely won't need to cancel your old contract when you switch to a new provider.

    As of September 2024, all customers can now complete their switch by only contacting their new provider. This is thanks to One Touch Switch, a new switching process implemented by Ofcom that providers must adhere to.

    Previously, if you switched to a provider on a different broadband network (such as BT to Virgin Media), you would need to cancel your old contract too, but this is no longer the case. You should now be able to switch to any other broadband network without contacting your old provider, which makes it simpler for everyone.

    Which contract length is right for me?

    You can choose from a range of contract lengths, depending on what is best for your needs. You can choose from as short as 30-day rolling options to 24-month terms.

    If you need student broadband or you're renting, shorter contracts might be easier to align with the end of your tenancy period. But if you own your home, you could get away with a longer contract if you're unlikely to move properties anytime soon.

    It's worth noting that shorter contracts usually come with higher monthly prices. So, if your priority is keeping your monthly bills down, and you don’t plan on moving home in the short-term, a longer contract might suit you better. However, it also means you'll be tied to the same price for longer. And this might make it harder to regularly switch to better deals.

    Will my prices go up mid-contract?

    Unless you're with one of a small number of fixed-price broadband providers, you'll likely have to handle at least one price increase during your contract.

    2025 saw inflation-linked broadband price rises of up to 7.5%, with most providers attaching their price rises to the CPI inflation rate at the start of 2024.

    However, under a new Ofcom ruling, many customers who signed up for a contract at some point in 2024 could now be on a fixed-rate price increase instead. So, if you recently signed up for a new deal, your monthly bill will likely increase by a fixed amount rather than an unpredictable inflation figure.

    Most big brands, such as BT, Virgin Media, Plusnet, TalkTalk and Vodafone, include yearly price rises in their contract terms, so you can't cancel your contract with them early for free.

    Others, like Sky and NOW Broadband, usually increase their prices, too, but they currently let you cancel your contract early without paying any exit fees (provided you do so within 30 days of being notified).

    Some providers (YouFibre, Trooli, BeFibre and more) don't have any price increases during the initial contract period.

    How do I know if I'm out of contract?

    If you can’t remember when you last signed up, you should be able to find your contract end date by in your online account on your provider's website. Your provider also has to send an 'end of contract' message when your end date is approaching, so if you’ve already received that you may already be out of contract.

    If you signed up for a Uswitch account when you got your last broadband deal, we'll also send you a reminder when your contract ends.

    If it has already ended, you should look to switch or renew it immediately to avoid paying expensive out-of-contract prices.

    What are end of contract notifications?

    An end-of-contract notification is an email, text, or letter your broadband provider must send you before your contract ends.

    Providers used to just increase your monthly price once you fall out of contract without even telling you. But since end-of-contract notifications were rolled out, they now have to tell you when your contract is ending, plus what other deals you could move onto for a better price.

    Can I get satellite broadband?

    You probably can get satellite broadband, but it's currently quite expensive.

    Starlink, which is owned by SpaceX, is now available everywhere in the UK. However, prices are high right now because it's a relatively new service that costs a lot of money to run.

    Other satellite broadband companies, such as the UK's OneWeb and Amazon's Kuiper project, are improving their internet coverage. But Starlink is the only modern satellite provider currently available to regular customers.
