    What is the best broadband deal?

    There’s no one-size-fits-all answer as to what the best broadband deal is. Each home has its own unique requirements based on the number of people and devices using broadband, what activities you use your broadband for or what extras you’d like — or would like to avoid — in your broadband package.

    How to find the best broadband deal

    To find the best broadband deal for your home, you should consider the following factors:

    • Broadband speeds: For most of us, speed is the most important factor when choosing a broadband package, and faster is usually better. You can buy the cheapest broadband package on offer, but if it’s not a fast enough speed, it’s not much of a deal.
    • Monthly price: The price you pay each month is likely going to be a critical factor when you’re looking for a new broadband deal. Many providers offer heavy discounts during the length of your contract, but do keep an eye out for when your contract ends. At uSwitch, we’ve found that out of contract costs rise by over 62% on average. There are also a number of other points to consider before just looking at the monthly price as there may be hidden savings — and costs — in other areas.
    • Contract length: Broadband deals tend to be offered as 12- or 18-month contracts, although some providers do offer flexible rolling plans. Although long contracts may seem off-putting, they actually benefit you since you’ll get to pay a lower monthly price for a longer period of time. But if you’re a student or renter, you’ll want to play close attention to the length of your contract or you could get stung by early termination fees.
    • Setup costs: When looking for broadband deals, don’t just pay attention to the monthly price, keep an eye out for setup costs. A low monthly price may be offset by an expensive upfront payment.
    • Freebies and rewards: To make a broadband deal more attractive, many providers will add on some kind of reward — like cashback, bill credits or a tech gift. Depending on the value of these (and the value to you), these can bring down the effective monthly cost.
    • Add-ons that you need: Broadband deals aren’t always limited to just broadband. You can typically find broadband packages from providers that bundle together several services, like TV packages, call plans or even mobile contracts. Bundling broadband and TV has its benefits, but you’ll want to make sure you’re choosing the right TV package for your needs before signing up. Check to make sure you’re able to watch your favourite series or sports.

    What broadband speed do I need?

    If you’ve been searching for a new broadband deal, you’ve likely seen speeds advertised as Mbps, which stands for “megabits per second” and refers to the download rate you can expect. When looking at broadband deals and evaluating broadband speeds, you probably know that a higher number of Mbps is faster. But just how much broadband speed do you need?

    A good way to gauge what speed you need is to run a broadband speed test while you’re at home and on your Wi-Fi network. A broadband speed test will tell you the download and upload speeds available on your current connection. If you’re happy with your broadband speed, you’ll want to find a broadband deal that can match these speeds. If you’re finding yourself always buffering or unhappy with your current broadband package, then look for something faster.

    Alternatively, you can always guess what broadband speed you need based on your home and what you mainly use the internet for.

    • 0-30 Mbps: If you live in a home with only one or two other people, or if you don’t often use the internet for more than browsing or social media, you can likely get away with ADSL broadband, which offers average speeds around 10Mbps.
    • 30-60 Mbps: Homes with three or more users online at the same time — especially if any or all of you are streaming — will want to opt for a fibre broadband package. Infrequent streamers and smaller houses can likely get away with a broadband deal offering speeds of 38Mbps or 50Mbps.
    • 60-100 Mbps: For homes where streaming is the main form of entertainment, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a steady connection to try to avoid buffering. Faster fibre broadband deals, offering speeds around 63Mbps, are usually only a few pounds more per month and are worth it for larger houses or people who love to stream TV series and films.
    • 100Mbps or higher: If you’re into gaming, have a lot of devices in your home or often download large files, you’ll want to look for broadband deals that can offer speeds in excess of 100Mbps. People who regularly work from home may also be interested in these faster connections to make conference calls and file-sharing even easier.

    Will I get the advertised broadband speed?

    The broadband speeds advertised on our broadband deals are average speeds, which is the current standard that providers have to adhere to. Average speeds are measured during peak time — between 8pm and 10pm when most people are online — and must be available to at least 50% of users. This means you’ve got a 50/50 chance of getting speeds above or below this number.

    There are a number of other factors that can affect your broadband speed:

    • The type of connection you have. In general, fibre broadband — whether fibre to the home or fibre to the cabinet — offers faster, more reliable speeds than ADSL broadband, which relies only on copper wires.
    • The time of day. Similar to a highway during rush hour, the number of people online can affect your broadband speed. During peak time when more people are online, your broadband speed may slow down. Again, this is an issue that mainly affects people on ADSL broadband deals.
    • How far you live from the exchange or cabinet. Depending on how far you are from the exchange, your broadband speed may be slower, particularly for fibre to the cabinet connections. With fibre to the cabinet broadband deals, the cabinets are connected to the telephone exchange by fibre-optic cables, which can transmit data faster than copper wires, but the final leg is made up of copper wires to your home. The further you live from the cabinet or exchange, the more of your wiring relies on copper wires, which means your connection will be slower.
    • Where you put your router. If your Wi-Fi connection is poor, it could just be as simple as moving your router. Many of us like to hide our routers in cabinets, but this interferes with the signal and will slow your broadband connection down. Keep your router out in the open, ideally away from other electrical devices.

    What broadband deals are available in my area?

    When looking for a broadband deal, it’s important to make sure it’s actually available in your area. Because broadband relies on fixed lines and infrastructure, not all broadband deals are available in every area. Before browsing our tables and comparing broadband deals, use our broadband postcode checker first to start narrowing down deals that you can actually get.

    Can I get a fibre broadband deal?

    If it’s been a while since you’ve switched broadband, you’ll probably be surprised to know that over 95% of the UK now has access to fibre broadband. As its availability has increased, the price of fibre broadband has come down by a lot, and there are a number of fibre broadband deals available on our site from a number of major providers. If you sort our tables by speed or broadband type, you’ll see that most fibre broadband deals are only a few pounds more per month, and the benefits that come from fibre are well worth the extra outlay.

    The benefits of fibre broadband:

    • Faster speeds. Depending upon the type of fibre broadband deal you sign up for, you can expect speeds ranging from roughly 36Mbps to 900Mbps. This is well in excess of what ADSL broadband can offer, which are typically around 10Mbps.
    • Reliability. Due to the infrastructure behind it, fibre broadband offers a more reliable connection than ADSL. Because fibre-optic cables can carry more data faster, people on fibre broadband deals don’t experience the same slowing of broadband during peak times.

    Should I get a broadband and phone deal?

    Both ADSL and fibre to the cabinet broadband deals rely on copper phone wires, so for these types of deals, you’ll also have to pay for line rental. This is already factored into the advertised cost of all broadband deals and is not optional, even if you rely more on your mobile than your home phone. A number of broadband providers do offer call packages as well, which can potentially save you money if you’re still using your home phone.     Should I get a broadband and TV deal?

    In addition to calls packages, a number of major broadband providers offer TV bundled together with their broadband deals. Signing up for a broadband and TV deal can often save you money — but only if you’re taking full advantage of your TV package. Before purchasing a broadband and TV deal, take stock of what you want out of a TV package. Do you watch a lot of live TV or do you mainly use catch-up or streaming services? Do you frequently record series or could you make do with a set-top box that doesn’t include this function? What series do you need to watch as they air and which could you watch as a boxset?

    How to switch to a new broadband deal

    Switching to a new broadband deal is easy. Here are some common questions we get about switching broadband.

    Can I switch at any time? Are there any restrictions?

    If you’re out of contract you can switch broadband provider at any time and won’t be liable for any early termination charges.

    However, if you’re still within your contract term or haven’t reached the minimum period that your provider insists on, it’s likely you’ll have to either pay up your contract or pay a charge.

    The exception is if, during the contract term, the provider you want to leave increases the price of the monthly subscription you agreed to when you signed up. In this case you’re free to leave without any financial penalty.

    How do I know if I’m out of contract?

    Ideally you’ll have noted down when your contract started. At uSwitch, we offer a contract reminder service for account holders. But if you haven’t recorded the start date, don’t worry — just ring your provider and ask. They’re legally obliged to tell you if you’re still under contract, as well as when your contract ends.

    Will I lose my broadband service at any stage?

    That depends on which type of provider you’re switching to and switching from.

    If you're switching between providers on the Openreach network — which covers a lot of major providers, including BT, TalkTalk, Plusnet and Sky — switching is seamless and easy. Simply contact your new provider and they'll coordinate the start date with your current provider. This should result in minimal downtime for you.

    To switch to or from Virgin Media, you'll need to contact both providers and coordinate the start and end dates to avoid overlap or downtime.
