You always have a 14-day ‘cooling off’ period, during which you can cancel your request to switch broadband provider – free of charge.
Author: Max Beckett | Last updated: 7 June 2023
Switching providers is usually a very simple process. According to a Uswitch study in 2023, UK broadband customers are missing out on £1.85 billion in savings each year¹ because of misplaced concerns about switching providers.
In reality, signing up to a better deal is almost always worth the switching process, especially considering the amount of money that could be saved.
Here’s a quick rundown of what happens when you switch:
Once you’ve chosen a deal on Uswitch, you will be sent to the provider’s website to sign up.
Add your details, confirm the broadband deal that you’d like to purchase and select any add-ons you’d like.
When you're paying for your new broadband service, your new provider will show you a clear rundown of all the charges you'd be expected to pay throughout your contract period.
You’ll also get to choose the date you want to start your new connection, known as an activation date
After the transaction is completed, you’ll get a confirmation email from your provider and it will start the process to activate your connection on your chosen date.
You might need to cancel your old contract yourself. Read below to see if you need to contact your existing provider.
This depends on which type of broadband you’re switching to.
You often won’t have to cancel your old broadband because most deals currently use the same network. But if you’re moving to (or from) a full fibre or Virgin Media package, you may have to contact your existing provider to cancel.
Uswitch doesn’t handle the provider switchover because broadband deals are purchased on the provider’s website. So if you’re not sure whether you need to cancel, get in contact with your current provider to find out what you need to do.
As for setting up your new broadband, this also depends on the type of connection you are moving to:
In most cases, you won't need an engineer to visit and install your new connection because many providers use the same Openreach broadband network.
So your new provider should just post you your new router, some cables and a list of instructions for setting it up yourself. These plans typically come with cheaper upfront costs, since it doesn’t involve booking time with an engineer.
However, this isn’t the case if you're switching to a deal that uses a different network. In this case, you may need to book an engineer to come round and install your new connection.
But even then, it should still be nice and straightforward. You can choose a convenient date and time for the engineer visit, and once they arrive, it should only take around 30 minutes to complete.
When you're switching to another provider, it's important to find out what type of broadband you’re currently on to see if your new broadband connection uses a different network.

Our pick of the week is NOW Broadband's Super Fibre deal. At just £23 per month for a 12 month contract and superfast speeds of 67Mbps, it's exceptionally good value.
12 month contracts are less common than 18 or 24 month terms, and they can often cost more as a result. So it's impressive to see such a low monthly price on such a short commitment.
Plus, you'll get to enjoy NOW Broadband's highly-rated customer service and discounted access to Sky TV content on Sky Cinema, Sky Sports and Sky Atlantic.
With dozens of broadband providers available across the UK, you’ll likely have a lot to choose from when searching for a new deal.
At Uswitch, we host a range of providers that we trust to deliver a fantastic service for many different needs. To find the right service for you and your household, you can compare offers from the UK's top broadband suppliers right here.
The right provider for you could be based on a number of aspects, including internet speed, value for money, reliability, customer service, TV bundles or home equipment.
We have in-depth expert reviews of the biggest broadband providers in the UK that consider all of these aspects and more. They’re also backed up by a customer survey that asked 20,000 people what they like the most (and least) about their provider.
This means you can easily find out which one is viewed as the best in a number of different categories to help you choose the right provider for you.

The providers with the most UK customers are BT, Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk. But that's not the best way to judge a provider's popularity. It's just as important to find out which providers are most popular with their customers.
In our 2023 Uswitch Telecoms Awards, we crowned Virgin Media the Most Popular Broadband Provider by using a mixture of our Awards customer survey results and sales data on the Uswitch site.

There are a few different types of broadband in the UK depending on where you live. Here are the most common ways you can get broadband in your area.
Part-fibre (or fibre to the cabinet) broadband is available to 97% of the country, and offers superfast internet speeds between 30-70Mbps. It's currently the most popular type of broadband in the UK.
Full fibre (or fibre to the premises), plugs fibre cables directly into your property, providing ultrafast speeds from 100Mbps all the way beyond 1Gbps (1000Mbps). It's currently available to around 50% of the UK.
Virgin Media cable broadband is a separate fibre-optic network run by Virgin. It provides ultrafast speeds of up to 1Gbps to over half of UK properties, but particularly in towns & cities.
4G/5G mobile internet is often used as a backup, but it can also be relied on for home broadband. It's a great option for homes that can't get access to fibre.
Copper ADSL is the oldest and slowest type of broadband in the country. It offers 10Mbps average speeds to 99% of the UK through Openreach copper phone lines.
Satellite broadband is also an option for people in hard-to-reach areas. SpaceX's company Starlink allows rural homes to get online via a satellite dish.
You can probably get fibre broadband in some form. As we mentioned above, part fibre is available nationwide and full fibre is fast spreading across the country.
If you want to see what fibre broadband options you have at your home, enter your postcode at the top of this page and we’ll show you which providers and packages are available in your area. You’ll likely be able to compare a range of speeds and prices to find a deal that’s right for you.
The majority of providers offer fibre broadband deals that are well worth the few extra pounds per month if you want fast speeds. Compared to standard copper broadband, fibre has two main benefits:
Much faster speeds: Fibre broadband will always be faster than copper ADSL. Even slower fibre speeds of 30-70Mbps offer a huge upgrade compared to the 10Mbps you get from ADSL. And these speeds are on offer for roughly the same price nowadays, too.
More reliability: Thanks to better quality cables, fibre broadband offers a more consistent, robust connection than ADSL. Plus, fibre-optic cables can carry more data than copper wires, so your internet won’t be as sluggish or slow during peak usage times.
The best broadband deal for you isn't always the cheapest, the fastest, or the one with the most attractive extras — it's the deal that is best suited to you and your household.
By comparing different offers from a range of providers, you can find one that matches your needs the most at a price you're comfortable with.
Here are the main things to consider when finding the right broadband offer for you:
If your contract has finished, it’s likely you’re paying a lot more each month than you need to. But this also means you can find a new deal straight away, so this would be the perfect time to find a cheaper broadband plan.
Comparing offers from a range of providers is the best way to find a broadband deal that best matches your budget. Your current provider may offer you some good value plans to re-contract to, but if you want to find the best value for your money, you’ll need to browse elsewhere too.
Faster fibre broadband deals are rapidly becoming more available, and sometimes even for similar prices to what you might already be paying. So if you’ve been struggling with a sluggish broadband speed, it’s always worth seeing if faster deals are accessible in your area.
If you’re signed up to a pay-TV service with Sky, BT or Virgin, it may work out cheaper to bundle your broadband service with them too. If you’re currently paying separate providers, see how much your total monthly cost currently is, and compare it to the TV & broadband bundles on offer from those providers.
Some providers are considered to have much better customer service than others. And some will offer more ways to strengthen your broadband connection, either with broadband guarantees or Wi-Fi boosters. So make sure to check what each provider offers outside of the speed and price.
If you’re moving into a new home, make sure to search broadband deals with your new address to see if you can continue your current broadband plan. If your existing service isn’t available there and you need to sign up to a new deal, you may need to pay some early exit fees.
You can add TV, landline or mobile phone services to your broadband contract with certain providers, which might make life easier and help keep your costs down. So if you use a landline or regularly watch pay-TV, a bundle package could be a good option.
Here are the main types of broadband deal you could choose from:
Broadband only deals are a great option if you:
Don't need a landline
Only watch TV on streaming services like Netflix or Disney Plus
Want cheaper broadband deals
Broadband-only deals offer straightforward plans for those who just want to get online, while still offering ultrafast speeds if you're after a fast connection.
Broadband and home phone deals might suit if you:
Regularly use your landline for calls
Can only get broadband through your phone line
Make a lot of international calls
Most broadband deals still require a landline to get internet to your property, so it's very common for these services to be offered together.
Broadband and TV bundles can help you save money if you:
Watch a lot of pay-TV on channels like Sky Sports, BT Sport or Sky Atlantic
Currently pay different providers for your broadband and TV
Want to pay for both services in a single monthly bill
If you're a Sky, Virgin Media or BT customer, in particular, a broadband and TV bundle can be a great way to access their premium services for a cheaper monthly fee.
Just bear in mind that these are better value only if you take full advantage of the TV package you choose.
These types of deals are rare, but they're great if you:
Have the budget to pay for top-quality services
Are loyal to one particular provider
Want maximum features from all your services
All-in broadband bundles can be very expensive, so they're not a good fit for people looking to keep costs down. But if you have a flexible budget and you're already using all of these services, you might find that the price is better than the overall cost you're currently paying.
Virgin Media offers an Ultimate Volt bundle that merges these four services — see if it's right for your needs.
If you receive Universal Credit or another type of financial support, you could save an average of £200 per year with a low-income social tariff, according to Ofcom³.
These are usually the cheapest broadband deals you can get, but they're only available if you qualify for them. So you’ll need to be on one of the following government financial support schemes in order to get the discounted service:
Universal Credit
Employment and Support Allowance
Jobseeker’s Allowance
Pension Credit
Income Support
See our guide on broadband social tariff deals to see if you're eligible for a heavily discounted broadband package.
Find out if you're eligible for a low-income broadband social tariff, and how much you could save per month.
You can choose from a range of contract lengths, depending on what is best for your needs.
If you’re a student or renting your home, shorter contracts might be easier to line up with the end of your tenancy period. Whereas if you’re a homeowner, you could likely get away with a longer contract if you’re unlikely to be moving home any time soon.
But it’s worth noting that shorter contracts usually come with higher monthly prices. So if your priority is keeping your monthly bills down, a longer contract might suit you better. However, it also means you’re tied into the same price for longer, which makes it harder to switch to cheaper deals as often.
“The broadband deal you’re on can have a huge impact on productivity as well as your monthly utility bills.
Broadband contracts tend to last between 12 and 24 months. But once they come to an end, they can be accompanied by some pretty steep price rises. However, you don’t need to accept these extra out of contract costs.
Don’t wait for a letter to drop through your front door if you know your broadband contract is due to come to an end. Start researching what deals are available, even if they are with your current provider. It can mean big savings in the short and long run, as well as improvements in speed and your overall online experience”.
