Following on from Ofcom's fair advertising guidelines, Ipitero has published a new guide to help consumers get the most from broadband.

According to the broadband benchmarking group, the online document explores issues such as how network congestion and traffic management policies of some providers affect overall speeds likely to be experienced.

Gavin Johns, chief executive officer at the firm, said: "Consumers want to understand what speed actually means. How long will it take to download a movie? Will VoIP work? What can be done to reduce waiting times?"

As well as attempting to clarify likely download and upload rates, the guide also addresses a number of confusing terms that are commonly used in the broadband industry in an attempt to give people a full picture of the service provided by their supplier.

Ofcom's recently introduced voluntary code of practice urges internet service providers to provide clearer information and support for consumers looking for broadband deals.

Specifically, the guidelines seek to address the way that headline speeds are advertised.
