The importance of a next generation broadband network to businesses in the UK should not be underestimated, according to one expert.

Michael Philips of Broadband Choices has highlighted the ways in which BT's plans for a super-fast fibre-optic broadband network could help greatly in many facets of business.

"It's hugely important. It will facilitate things like homeworking and remote conferencing .at the moment, whilst they are possible, are invariably quite hard work," commented Mr Philips.

Continuing: "Particularly as we work in a service economy in this country where things like creative services, such as design, require that we can move large files over high bandwidth connections instantaneously."

A report from the Broadband Stakeholders Group concluded that the long-term benefits to the UK associated with the wide-scale deployment of such a network could outweigh the cost of deployment.

BT's £1.5 billion programme could provide speeds of up to 1000mbps in the future.
