A newly-developed tool will alert broadband users when they are close to exceeding download limits.
The new tbbMeter tool from Thinkbroadband measures broadband use in order to alert broadband customers when they are close to exceeding their monthly allowances, allowing them to avoid incurring added charges.
Another use of the tool is to measure the actual speeds enjoyed over broadband connections against those advertised as 'up to' by providers.
Co-founder of Thinkbroadband, Sebastien Lahtinen, says that considering the current economic climate, the free-of-charge feature could save money for users.
He said: "With many ISPs imposing limits on how much you can download every month, it's likely you'll incur a financial penalty or have speed restrictions placed on your account should you exceed this limit, but it's hard to monitor usage especially with many households now owning multiple computers."
The tbbMeter works on all types of connections including Ethernet, wireless, dialup, ADSL, cable and mobile broadband.
