Broadband customers with family abroad are missing out on the chance to save a significant amount on their phone bills by making use of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology.
This is the conclusion drawn by Broadband Choices, which conducted a study finding that 70 per cent of broadband-connected UK homes are not taking advantage of VoIP services.
According to the broadband comparison site, this means over a third of British homes are missing out on the opportunity of saving as much as 70 per cent on their phone bills over the Christmas period.
Michael Phillips, Broadband Choices Product Director, said: "Christmas is always an expensive time of year and people need to be smarter with their money in these cash-strapped times, so I would urge anyone with relatives and friends living overseas and a broadband connection to seriously consider VoIP."
Broadband Choices pointed to products from Skype and Vonage as good packages to get started with VoIP.
