Virgin Media's new 50Mb broadband service could have been set up in part to pave the way for an IPTV service, one expert has suggested.
Reading between the lines, Kate Bevan of the Guardian has explained that as well as offering broadband subscribers a faster service, Virgin Media could also develop its upgraded network into a means of delivering IPTV.
Ms Bevan made the point that even HD content would not be out of the question over a 50Mb connection.
She commented: "It makes more sense when you realise that what makes profits for providers like Virgin is bundled services on top of the basic infrastructure.
"Those speeds would enable the delivery over the internet of high-definition TV on demand: just the kind of service an ISP would really like to be selling."
Meanwhile, Virgin Media CEO Neil Berkett has said that speeds of over 100Mb could be offered by the provider at some point in the future.
