Policy plan underlines need for next-generation broadband infrastructure in order for Britain to compete in the 21st century business world.
A government white paper has reiterated the need for Britain to be equipped with a broadband network fit for the new millennium.
According to the Cabinet Office publication, New Opportunities - Fair Chances for the Future, broadband will be vital to the UK's chances of taking advantage of the new "opportunities" in high-skilled jobs expected to emerge.
It is thought that the spread of high-speed internet means more positions will become available in global operations.
The report stated: "Grasping these opportunities depends on having a truly nationwide, high-quality business and technological infrastructure that facilitates international working, including a world-class broadband network."
In his forthcoming Digital Britain report, Lord Carter is expected to address the third of British households without an internet connection, proposing broadband services for all by the year 2012.
