Broadband customers are being charged extortionate rates for making calls to technical support lines, new evidence suggests.

A study by Which? found that several broadband companies were among the organisations which charged high rates for accessing technical support.

Tesco broadband was identified as being one of the broadband ISPs which was hitting customers with large bills for phone calls made to its technical support team.

In response, a Tesco spokeswoman told Which?: "The cost of calls to Tesco broadband technical support is something we've been looking at and listening to customer feedback on.

"As a result we'll continue to provide a very high quality of technical expertise to all our broadband customers but calls will now be charged at a local rate. We'll be contacting all our customers as soon as possible to let them know about the change in price."

It was found that Tesco was one of four companies using ultra-costly 090 numbers for its technical support.
