Fibre-optic broadband specialist Virgin Media is offering £50 off triple play broadband packages as part of a limited-period incentive aimed at capitalise on the burgeoning market for on-demand TV.

Under the terms of the deal, all customers who sign up online for a Virgin Media broadband product that bundles together fibre-optic broadband, TV and home phone will be entitled to £50 off their bill. In order to qualify for the discount, consumers must order online from Top 10 Broadband and complete the transaction before June 22nd.

The promotion also applies to the internet service provider's quad play offering, which includes TV, calls and fibre-optic broadband but adds a mobile telephony service. The mobile phone component of this bundle offers buyers the chance to choose a £10 SIM and get 200 minutes and 200 texts per month and keep their current phone. Alternatively, they can opt for a £10 SIM and get 100 minutes per month but get a brand new handset.

All of the triple-play broadband deals included in the scheme offer a broadband connection of at least 10Mb – well above the current national average of 3.6Mb. However, the quad-play deal entitles buyers to a super-fast 20Mb connection, making it ideal for heavy downloaders and customers who consume the majority of their entertainment online.

Virgin Media’s latest drive to build its subscriber base comes in the week that the company’s fibre-optic network has been very firmly in the media spotlight. Under plans revealed in the landmark Digital Britain report, the provider was granted a series of financial inducements to pave the way for it to commit further investment in the UK’s broadband network.

These include tax breaks, as well as the allocation of public money to the company to part-fund construction of next-generation network in areas where it would be unprofitable for Virgin Media to do so alone. Further funding for a next-generation network is to come from BBC revenue that is left over from the switchover from analogue to digital TV.

Currently, Virgin Media is able to provide a cable broadband service to around 65 per cent of the country and is continuing to roll out services this year. The fastest package available to subscribers is the XXL product, which delivers a connection of 50Mb.
