Broadband access has become a major part of the modern business world, new figures have suggested.
Research by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, highlighted that while 93 per cent of companies with ten or more persons have access to the internet, 82 per cent specifically use broadband connections.
The continent-wide study revealed that broadband has boosted their business, as sales through online retail channels now account for 12 per cent of businesses' turnover.
It was also found that, in the UK alone, 15 per cent of enterprise turnover was generated from e-commerce, while 85 per cent of companies have a fixed broadband connection.
The publication of the findings has come after a global study by Akamai ranked the UK 26th in relation to broadband speed.
According to the research, an average connection of 3.4Mb is available in the country, which is well behind a number of other nations including South Korea.
