A new report has ranked the UK as having the 26th fastest broadband speeds in the world.

Traffic management firm Akamai found that the average UK broadband package offers 3.4Mb, with 19 per cent of businesses and consumers enjoying speeds of greater than 5Mb.

However, the UK lags far behind South Korea, which topped the chart, where the average connection offers 14.5 Mb.

Broadband users in nations such as the US, Netherlands and Ireland all enjoy faster downloads, Akamai revealed, although the UK outperforms neighbouring France and Spain.

The firm reported that average connection speeds around the world increased by 18 per cent during the last year.

Although UK broadband may not be the fastest, media regulator Ofcom reported last month that domestic consumers enjoy some of the cheapest connections in the world.
