Mobile broadband customers with O2 and Vodafone benefit from the UK’s fastest connection speeds, according to a study conducted by Siroda.

The research company, which specialises in measuring networks’ performances, assessed the speed of connections of all five major UK mobile broadband suppliers’ networks over a 60-day period. Tests were conducted at 150 locations across the UK and at all times of day to represent as closely as possible consumers’ usage habits.

O2 was revealed to be the UK’s fastest operator for downloading a music track in 12 cites and topped the survey. Vodafone came in second after finishing top in five cities. Third, fourth and fifth places were taken by T-Mobile, 3 and Orange respectively.

Vodafone, however, outperformed O2 for web browsing, occupying the top spot in five locations. O2, Orange and T-Mobile came in joint second with first place positions in four cities each, while 3 was deemed the top performer in three locales.

The most impressive showing for Telefonica subsidiary O2 was in London, where the average page loading time was just 1.7 seconds. This was some 30 percent faster than the network in fifth place.

O2's Chief Technology Officer, Derek McManus, said the strong performance in the capital was the result of extensive investment in improving its network and reiterated plans to upgrade connection quality across the UK.

He said: "We’re very pleased with these conclusive findings, which have been independently verified [by the British Approvals Board for Telecommunications]. Our London customers are now seeing the benefits of the investment we made before Christmas, where we spent £30m delivering 40 new sites."

“Outside London, where network quality is shown to be strong, we continue to scale our investment and have committed to deliver a further 1500 new sites by the end of this year, building ahead of the demand for data services."

Orange’s disappointment at its showing in Siroda’s study will be tempered by its strong performance in the recent YouGov survey, which is the UK’s most extensive. The company was rated the best in seven categories, - more than any other provider. Notable wins included customer service and reliability, ease of use and upload broadband speeds.
