Consumers and businesses in rural Cambridgeshire are set to gain access to faster broadband speeds, it has been reported.

Homes and company premises in Huntingdon, St Ives, St Neots and Yaxley are to benefit from the latest round of BT telephone exchange upgrades, which will see them gain access to high-speed broadband from autumn 2010.

According to the Hunts Post 24, 43,000 homes and businesses in the county will benefit from the infrastructure improvements, which come as part of a £1.5 billion investment programme launched by the broadband provider.

John Bridge, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, claimed it is "absolutely essential" that advanced communication technology is put in place, as the region attempts to attract international business.

Referring to high speed broadband, he commented: "We've got to get it as quickly as we can.

"And we must also not forget that there are other areas that will not be getting faster speeds. It is crucial that they do."
