Consumers and businesses in Taunton are set to benefit from upgrade work to BT's broadband infrastructure, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, download speeds of up to 60Mb will become available in the Somerset town from autumn 2011.

Speaking to the news provider, a Taunton Deane Borough Council spokesman said BT's infrastructure investment would provide "a huge boost" to the local economy.

He commented: "For businesses this offers many new services including fast backup systems and wider use of HD video.

"For homes, it means some members of a family could be watching different high definition movies or 3D TV, while others are gaming or working on complex graphics or video projects."

Internet service provider BT is currently spending up to £2.5 billion upgrading its UK telecoms network to support next-generation broadband.
