A select few broadband users in Jersey are now receiving some of the fastest home broadband speeds in the world, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, Jersey Telecom's 1Gb ultra-fast fibre broadband pilot has gone live at the Castle Quay development in St Helier.

The internet service provider (ISP) claims this is the fastest residential internet service outside of South Korea, and residents have seen their downloading capabilities multiplied 50-fold.

Graeme Miller, Chief Executive Officer at Jersey Telecom, said: "We don't think anyone else is doing this at the moment.

"One of the most difficult things is demonstrating the speed because we have not been able to find any commercial sites that provide a gigabit link that people can use."

Back in the world of regular high-speed broadband, Jersey Telecom is currently offering six months free web services when islanders sign up for a 20Mb broadband deal.

The ISP normally charges £49.99 per month for the package, however for a limited time only consumers can pay just £25 until month seven of their contract.
