Internet service provider TalkTalk has introduced a new broadband internet speed checking service which allows web users to calculate their average download speeds.

The TalkTalk Speed Checker - which the company claims is the most advanced internet connection diagnostic tool in the country - lets users see the download speeds delivered by their nearest exchange and the actual speed of their home internet connection.

According to Dido Harding, Chief Executive Officer of TalkTalk, the information will allow customers to "optimise their service and truly get the fastest speeds their line will allow".

She added: "In our recent trial, over half of customers using our Speed Checker made some quick and easy changes to their home set up with a view to improving their speed."

TalkTalk customers can test their broadband connection speed by simply putting their telephone number and postcode into the Speed Checker.

For the best results, web users are asked to switch off all internet-ready devices in their home and plug their computer directly into their router.
