Video traffic is placing increased demands on UK broadband networks, it has been suggested.

Plusnet reported that streaming has grown to such an extent that it now accounts for 50 per cent of the firm's online traffic.

The broadband provider explained that YouTube is the single most popular application, with BBC iPlayer in second place.

Plusnet reported a significant fall in network traffic last Thursday when YouTube experienced website downtime.

Last week, analyst firm Point Topic predicted there will be 50 million IPTV users worldwide by the end of the decade.

The organisation forecast that around a third of Europe's 160 million broadband subscribers will be using web-enabled TV services by 2020.

Oliver Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Point Topic, explained that IPTV adoption levels are particularly high in France at the moment, and other nations are likely to catch up.
