Many UK households can improve their broadband speeds by carrying out simple home maintenance, it has been claimed.
According to broadband provider TalkTalk, more than half a million consumers are losing 4Mb in download speeds due to poor in-home set-ups.
The firm said this is equivalent to 2.3 million Mb of speed being lost every second by UK internet subscribers.
Consumers can improve their speeds by making some straightforward changes to wiring, routers, filters and phone sockets, TalkTalk stated.
Dan Downham, a TalkTalk Bright Sparks Engineer, commented: "A bit of basic home maintenance and some re-jigging of the wiring in the living room could speed up internet connections no end.
"The megabits are coming into your home but they’re going to waste before they can be put to good use."
He said people need to "think of broadband in the same way as water and electricity" - as a commodity which can go to waste if they are not careful.
