Film and TV subscription service Netflix has revealed which broadband provider offered the fastest streaming service during December 2012.

The latest speed chart from the online content provider reveals that Virgin Media performed the best - delivering 2.16Mb speeds for Netflix streams in the UK.

O2 was next in the chart where fixed broadband is concerned, offering streaming speeds of 2.03Mb, reports

The firm edged BT - which recorded average UK speeds of 2.02Mb - into third, ahead of Sky (1.94Mb), TalkTalk (1.92Mb) and Everything Everywhere (1.86Mb).

Consumers using Netflix from a mobile device - such as a Wi-Fi and mobile broadband enabled iPad - were unable to enjoy streaming at the same speed.

However, this could change as 4G services become more prevalent in the UK following the upcoming 800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum auction.

Netflix revealed that the fastest mobile broadband providers were Vodafone and O2 - both of which recorded 0.51Mb speeds.

Everything Everywhere - the parent company of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK - offered 0.49Mb streaming speeds, which were matched by the other major dongle provider Three.

UK Netflix viewers are gaining access to an increasing array of options, as innovation continues within the consumer technology sector.

They are now able to watch films and TV in HD at home on a connected TV, via a PC or laptop, or on the move using smartphones and tablets.

"Stream TV programmes and films over the internet with your PS3, Wii, Xbox, Apple TV, internet-connected Smart TV or Blu-ray player," Netflix urges.

"Get the free Netflix app for your iPhone, iPad, Android or Windows 8 phone or tablet to watch wherever you go."
