TalkTalk is aiming to increase the capacity of its network a hundredfold over the next five years.
Clive Dorsman, Managing Director at TalkTalk Technology, explained that global internet traffic is set to treble between now and 2017, as more people take advantage of smart, connected devices.
The rising popularity of smartphones, tablets and connected TV devices such as YouView boxes will put networks under additional strain, he predicted.
"Peak traffic on the TalkTalk network reached a new record of 706 Gigabits per second earlier this month," Mr Dorsman noted.
And with this in mind, he said the firm is investing in its network, to ensure it can meet user demand over the coming months and years.
"We have already unbundled 2,724 exchanges, covering more than 95 per cent of the population, and are increasing the capacity of our network a hundredfold over the next five years," Mr Dorsman stated.
In a recent report, Cisco predicted that almost half of the world’s population will be using the internet by 2017.
