Virgin Media news

Virgin Media remained the fastest UK broadband provider for Netflix streaming during December 2013.

Online viewers with a Virgin Media broadband connection were able to stream TV and film content at an average of 2.99Mb at peak times last month.

This compared to 2.66Mb on BT broadband, 2.44Mb with Sky and 2.35Mb with TalkTalk.

EE was found to be the slowest of the major UK broadband providers for Netflix streaming, with peak average speeds reaching 2.32Mb in December.

Netflix explained that the average streaming speeds are "well below peak performance" due to a number of factors.

These include the "variety of encodes" used to deliver TV shows and movies carried on the service, and the broadband connections and viewing devices used by individual consumers.

"Those factors cancel out when comparing across [broadband providers], so these relative rankings are a good indicator of the consistent performance typically experienced across all users on a network," Netflix added.
