BT broadband customers saw the fastest average Netflix streaming speeds in February 2014, it has been revealed.

The online content provider's monthly Speed Index update revealed the average performance of Netflix-based video streams for BT customers was 2.85Mb, up from 2.66Mb in December 2013.

As such, the service provider overtook Virgin Media at the top of the standings. The cable operator saw average speeds of 2.88Mb, down from 2.99Mb.

Of the other fixed broadband providers, Sky - up from 2.44Mb to 2.49Mb - tied for third place in the chart with TalkTalk, which saw average stream speeds rise from 2.35Mb.

EE streams were the slowest on average, achieving speeds of 1.93Mb, down from 2.32Mb in December.

Average streaming speeds can be affected by a number of factors, including network performance, traffic management policies and video quality.

Netflix says the listed speeds reflect the average performance of all streams on each broadband provider's network, and are "an indicator of the performance typically experienced across all users".

"A faster network generally means a better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions," it claimed.
