Residents of a small Indian village can download movies and shop online more quickly than people living in London, a new study has found.

According to research by Fix Britain's Internet, an industry coalition consisting of Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone and the Federation of Communication Services, the average connection speed in London is 22.44Mbps.

By contrast, the 13,880 residents of Rani, Rajasthan enjoy broadband speeds of 34.8Mbps, the Mirror reports.

London was also found to lag behind places including Cosoba in Romania (112.2Mbps), Garrochales in Costa Rica (27.4Mbps) and Harbour Island in the Bahamas (26.6Mbps)

In addition, figures showed that London does not even have the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, as it is outpaced slightly by Manchester (23.61Mbps).

The findings come after Fix Britain's Internet revealed that one in four Britons are not happy with their internet service, while four million people have experienced stress and anxiety due to a slow internet connection.

Speaking after the latest data was published, North Wales farmer Aled Evans said: "Slow and unreliable internet is a massive issue for me.

"Currently, access to superfast broadband is almost non-existent in rural areas and painfully slow speed broadband is putting farmers such as myself at a real disadvantage."

Mr Evans stressed that with more and more farmers diversifying into the food, drink and tourism sectors, having a high quality internet connection is "more essential than ever for new business growth".

Karan Chadda, Director of London-based marketing consultancy Evolving Influence, added that his organisation is "heavily dependent on fast, reliable broadband".

He warned that slow broadband connections waste time, delay projects and sometimes have commercial implications.

"It’s a weekly occurrence and something needs to change to bring Britain up to speed with the rest of the world," Mr Chadda insisted.
