Here's how to get a PS5 on Black Friday 2021

Black Friday is the ultimate shopping weekend for those looking to get their hands on gadgets and some new tech. And this year, no piece of tech is as sought after as the PlayStation 5. Launched in November 2020, the PS5 has been at the top of almost every gamer’s wishlist for the last 12 months.

However, Sony’s flagship gaming console has remained elusive, and many excited PlayStation fans are still waiting to get their hands on one. Unfortunately, PS5 availability doesn’t look like it’s going to improve until 2022. This is largely due to the global shortage in semiconductors, which was made even worse by the Suez Canal blockage and the COVID-19 pandemic.

But not all hope is lost for this Black Friday. Sony’s CEO, Jim Ryan, told The Financial Times, “The pace of the improvement in the supply chain will gather throughout the course of the year. By the time we get to the second half of [2021], you’re going to be seeing really decent numbers indeed.”

While there were a few notable stock drops over summer, new PS5s have remained scarce since. So what’s the best way to get a PS5 this Black Friday?

How to find PS5 stock in the UK

If you want to get a PS5 for Black Friday, you’re going to have to start looking early, so be prepared to put the hours in to find the device in stock. Here are a few tips that could help:

1. Get on Twitter

Twitter is the place to be for fast, reactive updates of which retailers are expecting to drop new stock in the coming days and weeks. There are a number of dedicated accounts that give you daily updates on where to look for PS5 stock.

User account @PS5StockAlertUK, for example, is quick to highlight shops that have the highly sought-after console in their stores.

2. Follow a specific retailer

There are around 15-20 major UK retailers that stock the PS5, and trying to regularly check stock with each of them could take up all your time between now and Black Friday. We’d suggest choosing a couple of shops and websites that you’ve had a good shopping experience with and focusing on them.

3. Be prepared to pay

The moment stock comes in, you need to be ready to click purchase. This is why choosing retailers you’ve had a good experience with is important. Make sure you’ve got all your payment details and two-factor authentication sorted in advance.

In fact, if you can sign into retailer accounts and register your payment and shipping details in advance, this will make things a lot faster when you’re looking to grab the last PS5 they have in stock.

4. Sign up to stock alerts

Once you’ve signed up and made an account, be sure to subscribe to stock alerts if you can. If they give you a heads up as to when PS5 stock comes in you could be first in line with your payment details at the ready.

5. Search for the right PS5 product

This may seem obvious, but make sure you’re searching for the version of the PS5 that you want — either the PS5 or the PS5 Digital Edition. It would be heartbreaking if you accidentally bought the model that wasn’t right for you. Or worse — missed a stock drop because you were refreshing the wrong product page.

6. Don't give up

You’ve probably never had to work so hard to buy a gaming console, and it can be easy to feel downhearted, but don’t give up. You may miss a few stock drops, but if you’re consistent and patient you’re more likely to grab one by Black Friday.

Where can I find a PS5 in the UK?

Listed below are the UK’s biggest retailers, most of whom recently restocked to great demand around mid-late October. At the time of writing they were all out of stock again, but some retailers like John Lewis rumoured to drop more over the Black Friday weekend.

  • Very
  • Game
  • Amazon
  • John Lewis & Partners
  • Asda
  • Argos
  • Currys
  • Tesco
  • BT
  • EE
  • ShopTo
  • Studio
  • Hamleys
  • Littlewoods

Alternative retailers for PS5 restock

As well as monitoring the big retailers, here are a few smaller or more niche ones that are worth keeping an eye on in the lead up to Black Friday. One of the key advantages to niche gaming retailers is their efforts to prevent ‘scalpers’ buying up stock and reselling it for inflated prices.

Sites like Amazon, Currys and Argos won’t do much to prevent customers buying up as much of its available PS5 stock as possible, which shrinks availability and forces prices up elsewhere on the web.

Simply Games

Simply Games has only been offering consoles to customers who register their interest ahead of time. This may sound like a negative, but it’s actually a great way of competing with bots and ensuring only actual gamers get their hands on a PS5.

Register your interest with Simply Games now.

Box has traditionally used a lottery system to allocate PS5 restock, once again ensuring that bots and scalpers can’t grab all the available stock to resell at inflated prices. They also have a load of other tech for sale over Black Friday, so it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.

The Game Collection

You can sign up to restock alerts from The Game Collection and ‘register your interest’ at the same time. This system is another effort to make sure that consoles go to actual gaming fans and not resellers.

The biggest downside to this retailer is that in the past it’s only offered next-gen console stock as part of premade bundles, adding in things like games, extra controllers and charging docks. Which is great if you want to buy these too, but not so great if you’re just after the standalone console.

Scan is where gamers go to get PC parts, and it’s running an “allocation update soon” so it’s possible that it may be receiving more PS5 stock soon. However it also has a large backlog of orders to fill first, so you might be left waiting a while before your order gets processed.
