Samsung Galaxy S2 owners will be able to download the latest version of Android from tomorrow, reports suggest.
According to the mobile mavens at Engadget, owners of unlocked Galaxy S2 phones bought off-contract will be able to grab Android Ice Cream Sandwich from March 10th via Sammy’s proprietary download solution, Kies.
Those of you who bought their phone on a pay monthly contract – which will be most of you – will have to wait a while to get on board while your carrier ensures its services work with the new OS and subject the software to tests.
But when it does finally arrive it’ll be well worth the wait, bringing a suite of new features to the blockbuster blower. Not least the NFC-harnessing Android Beam that allows you to swap content with other Android phone users just by touching your device against theirs.
Also incoming is Face Unlock, which uses face detection technology to put a novel, if not always completely watertight, spin on screen unlock security. And there are performance optimisations on the way too, which at the very least ought to make for a smartphone experience with a bit more snap.
