The Samsung Galaxy S3 was the best gadget of the last 12 months, according to Stuff Magazine, seeing off strong competition from the iPhone 5 and the Google Nexus 7.
Samsung’s flagship phone also pipped Apple’s latest kit in the smartphone of the year category at the ceremony, capping what was a fairly miserable night for the Cupertino-based tech giant on which it missed out on five awards.
Other big wins on the night include tablet of the year for Google’s budget-priced, compact Nexus 7 by Asus. Smartphone app of the year, meanwhile, went to Strava, while Sky Sports for the iPad picked up best tablet app.
Stuff magazine editor Will Findlater said: “2012 has been a landmark year for technology, particularly in the tablet and smartphone spaces.
“While Apple’s gadgets have been exemplary, its competitors have made even greater strides – and the Galaxy S3, with its 4.8-inch HD screen and unique interface innovations, shows that Samsung has made the greatest strides of all.”
Signs of a changing of the guard in the smartphone market come after what has been a tumultuous period for Apple, one which saw the resignation of software head Steve Forstall and a dip in its share price after worse-than-expected sales of the iPad 3.
