Samsung plots 20 megapixel camera phones for late 2014

Samsung is looking to fight back in the battle for smartphone camera supremacy, with the news that the world’s largest mobile-maker is apparently working on a new 20-megapixel sensor that could make its debut late next year.

The lens, which it seems is likely to show up first on the Galaxy Note 4, would mean Sammy’s snappers could be on a par with Sony’s current Xperia Z1 that uses a similar number of pixels.

However, it’s unclear whether Samsung will be able to bring the same imaging nous to its devices. Sony’s pedigree with top-end cameras and DSLRs has given it the edge in 2013.

There’s also the small matter of Nokia’s 41-megapixel-packing Lumia 1020, which has received rave reviews. Apple is also said to be priming a beefed-up camera for next year’s iPhone 6.

Samsung’s new 20-megapixel effort would likely only appear on the Galaxy Note 4, while its 16-megapixel module would become standard issue on its other, top-end devices.
