Tesco Hudl smartphone incoming with Samsung Galaxy S5-style specs?

Tesco is drawing up plans for a lavishly-specc’d own-branded Hudl smartphone to take the fight to the likes of Android big-hitters Samsung and HTC, after it made real waves in the tablet market last year.

Philip Clark, Tesco CEO, revealed the retail giant’s intention to follow up on the 550,000-selling Hudl tablet with a handset in an interview on Radio 5 this morning.

Although he didn’t mention the phone’s specifications, the BBC report cited evidence that Tesco plans to equip it with features to rival Samsung’s Galaxy S5. But at what sounds like a fraction of the price.

According to Clark, the Hudl smartphone will be “aggressively priced”. Given that Tesco’s tablet was a snip at £199, we’d guess – and it’s only a guess – that the handset will come in at the kind of £300-350 price point that normally indicates a mid-range effort.

Where you can probably expect Tesco to make compromises and cost-savings, though, is on build quality. If you’re expecting a premium feel, think again. But if a plastic construction doesn’t bother you, you’ll be quids in.

As with the Hudl tablet, the smartphone will surely run Android, with Tesco keeping UI tweaks to a minimum for an Android experience that probably won’t be a million miles from Nexus phones.

What bloatware that the phone will sport will be restricted to Tesco apps and services. That means you’ll get Blinkbox movies pre-installed, as well as the supermarket’s Clubcard and Groceries apps and possibly an NFC-enabled application so you can pay for goods instore by swiping your phone over a reader.
