Samsung Galaxy A Series: Two new smartphones unveiled

Samsung Galaxy A3 2017

Samsung has unveiled its new 2017 Galaxy A Series of handsets, with the Korean company due to show off two new phones in the range at the annual CES tech event in Las Vegas this week.

The Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 each have distinctive set of specifications.

The Galaxy A3 comes with a 4.7–inch SuperAMOLED display, with an octa–core processor. Round the back there’s a 13 megapixel camera, while up front there’s an eight-megapixel camera for taking selfies.

The latter features a special ‘floating shutter’, meaning you can take selfies by touching anywhere on the Galaxy A3’s screen.

The device’s display also doubles up as a flash when taking shots in low light, a feature which is already found in Apple’s newer iPhones.

Inside you’ll find 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage space, which can be expanded by 256GB via microSD.

The larger Galaxy A5 has a brighter 5.2–inch FHD Super AMOLED display. Its cameras have a heftier megapixel count too, each clocking in at 16 megapixels.

Storage–wise it features 32GB, with microSD expansion by 256GB. RAM comes in at 3GB. Each phone has USB–C tech with fast charging. They come in four colours too: Black Sky, Gold Sand, Blue Mist and Peach Cloud.

Disappointingly, neither the Galaxy A3 or Galaxy A5 come the latest Nougat version of Google Android.

They're set to ship in February with 2015’s Android Marshmallow instead.
