Samsung has confirmed its top–end smartwatch will work with arch–rival Apple’s iPhone, with the announcement of dedicated iOS apps to help pair the Gear S3 with the world’s bestselling smartphone.
Although Samsung had previously mooted extending support for its watches to Apple’s platform, this is the first time that the required apps have been made available in the App Store.
Owners of the Gear S2 and slick new Gear S3 will need to download the Gear S iOS app and follow on-screen instructions in order to complete pairing. Gear Fit2 owners will need to download the dedicated Gear Fit app.
Samsung says that features will vary by device, meaning older iPhones may not have the latest functionality.
Users must have iOS 9 or higher installed too. Either way, it makes the new Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic even more appealing.
The water and dust-resistant watches owe more to luxury watch designs than rival wearables, including the Apple Watch.
There are built-in GPS and speedometer apps, as well as the ability to track distance covered, calories burned and heart rate.
The Gear S and Gear Fit apps are available to download now.
