In the world of broadband there never seems to be a dull moment, and March 2007 proved no different. Here at Top 10 we like to keep an eye on all the news and report back to you all the important and interesting stories.
February’s main story was the Virgin/BSkyB battle, which continued on into March and does not seem to be close to an end. Adverts slating each others service, slanging matches in the press and rumours of an out-and-out breakdown in communications between the two companies seem to be the order of the day.
But probably the biggest story in March was the BBC Watchdog broadband report, which did not shine too favourably on Orange, who were heavily criticised within the program. Brightview (Madasafish, Waitrose & Global) whose ISP’s were one of the top performers in the report, were disappointed in the program because they feel it failed to show their success as a reputable, trustworthy ISP with immaculate support. They feel the report focused more on the larger broadband companies including BT who were rated first even though they were placed 21st out of the 29 ISPs for percentage of customer satisfaction.
Another big story in March was the possible takeover of Pipex (the 7th largest ISP in the UK) while BT, Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Media are all prospective buyers, the smart money may be on Virgin Media stumping up the cash for a buy out rumoured to be in the region of £500m.
Also staying with takeovers, there were also rumours that Sardinian based ISP Tiscali maybe about to be bought, yet Tiscali are not confirming anything. So keep your ears open there.
With all these takeovers and the market becoming more competitive it was no surprise to see Biscit Internet finally crumble and go into administration. After viewing their website today, it seems they have been bought by O-bit telecom.
So much more has occurred in March that deserves more focus, such as BT cutting prices, Virgin Media to offer 20Mb/s broadband, “Fair Usage Policies” taking a grilling, and Microsoft Vista users struggling to get their broadband connection to work. Not to mention the fact that Madasafish and UK Online are now available on our site!
So have a good April and make the most of the days getting longer, and make sure you keep yourself up to date by reading our news page regularly – we will continue to keep you posted on all the latest broadband news on into the year. Enjoy.
