A 69-year-old widow becomes the latest to be conned into 'free' broadband in Yorkshire town.

The friend of a pensioner has told how she was conned by a door-to-door salesman in the Whitby area who claimed to offer 'free' broadband.

As highlighted in the case of former Whitby mayor Ada Myers recently, TalkTalk cannot offer free broadband in the area despite the claims of the unofficial conmen pushing the service.

Cynthia Jameson, a 69-year-old widow, was persuaded to sign up for a deal which claimed to offer free broadband on top of line rental and phone calls from the provider.

Family friend Mike Sedgewick told the Whitby Gazette: "I've dealt with many similar cases - these doorstep salesmen, who know there’s no free broadband in Whitby, tie people in knots over the terms of contracts.

"People should be on their guard and not deal with them."
