Ofcom has released a message of support as Virgin Media launches its new 50Mb offering.

The communications industry regulator welcomes the major leap in speed, which is over twice as fast Be Broadband's 24Mb package, the previous best.

Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive, said that along with BT's planned high-speed fibre-optic network, the development signaled an improvement of services is on the way for UK consumers.

"We welcome the roll out of super-fast broadband in Virgin Media's network. This will give millions of consumers the opportunity to take up faster broadband services.

"Alongside the plans announced by BT and other providers, this means that consumers can look forward to super-fast broadband in many areas of the UK."

Ofcom plans to publish a statement on its proposals for super-fast broadband deployment in early 2009, Richards confirmed.
