People using satellite broadband

Avanti Communications has secured a major new broadband supply contract with the UK's Technology Strategy Board (TSB).

The satellite broadband provider will provide web services to the TSB in a £216,000 deal, providing online support for its Digital Advanced Rural Testbed project.

This latest broadband deal is one of the first to be announced since Avanti's HYLAS 1 satellite successfully launched into orbit in November 2010.

David Williams, Chief Executive Officer at the broadband provider, commented that the role of Avanti's satellites in the broadband market is "well established".

However, he said it is "increasingly obvious" that the "relentless increase in demand for bandwidth" around the world is creating new urgent reasons to integrate satellite capacity into terrestrial networks.

Mr Williams said this is especially the case where video delivery is involved, noting that satellite broadband contracts "provide excellent support for this development.
