The rollout of fibre broadband services is helping to attract more people to the internet, Plusnet has claimed.
In a blog posting for the service provider, Martyn Hudson noted that there are now more than 600 million fixed broadband subscribers around the world.
He claimed that broadband is "taking the world by storm", with subscriber growth recorded at 2.7 per cent during the first quarter of the year.
"One of the main things fuelling broadband’s accelerated growth is a need for speed," he claimed.
"Super-fast fibre is becoming increasingly popular with homeowners and businesses."
Mr Hudson suggested that the advent of IPTV services will further increase demand, with online streaming requiring a fast, stable broadband connection.
"The future is fibre… and streaming’s in full flow," he commented.
