The number of fixed broadband lines in the UK increased to 21.067 million during the second quarter of 2012, it has been reported.

Figures published by Ofcom reveal a rise of 157,000 compared to the first three months of the year.

In Q1 2012, the media regulator reported 20.91 million fixed-line broadband connections in the UK.

On an annual basis, growth of 6.5 per cent was witnessed. The UK gained an additional 1.3 million broadband lines between Q2 2011 and Q2 2012.

Of the Q2 2012 total, some 601,000 connections were fibre based - reliant on either fibre-to-the-cabinet or fibre-to-the-premises connections.

Ofcom also found that the UK is home to 33.2 million fixed telephone lines, slightly down from the 33.3 million reported between January and March.
