Developers of new homes in London could soon be required to ensure they are equipped with full-fibre broadband connections.
The plan has been put forward by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan as part of his new initiative designed to make London "the smartest city in the world".
Mr Khan has also pledged to work with Transport for London and councils to roll out 4G using public buildings and infrastructure.
The Smarter London Together plan also includes a commitment to supporting bids for government funding to test 5G connectivity.
"I am proud to unveil my vision for making that ambition a reality," Mr Khan said.
"We need a step-change in how we harness innovation for the benefit of all Londoners."
Mr Khan added that since London is one of the leading technology hubs in the world, the city needs to implement big and bold ideas that have not been attempted elsewhere.
This, he said, could position it as a global test-bed city for civic innovation, with the very best ideas being "developed, amplified and scaled".
