Virgin Media news

Virgin Media retained its top spot as the broadband provider offering the fastest average speeds across the UK last month, according to the latest report from industry analyst Ookla, which shows that customers of the major suppliers benefitted from mean internet speeds of 20.94Mb in March.

The monthly analysis of domestic broadband usage indicates that Virgin Media remains way ahead of its rivals in terms of speed, with average downloads standing at 42.60Mb - ahead of BT in second, with 25.41Mb.

Plusnet now ranks third in terms of speed and is the only other broadband provider with a ranking above the UK average, with average downloads of 21.16Mb.

At the lower end of the table, TalkTalk has now overtaken Sky, with an average speed of 12.65Mb, compared with 12.38Mb, while EE remains the slowest of the major providers, with 12.27Mb.

Though the table indicates that there is a major difference between the higher ranking providers and those at the bottom end, Ookla notes that its calculations do not include a large proportion of the slowest and a smaller portion of the fastest results for each supplier, so many rural connections are not taken into account.
