Virgin Media has dropped the price of its entry-level Big Connection package.

It means customers can now benefit from unlimited superfast broadband speeds of 50Mb and free weekend calls from £5 per month plus line rental for the first 12 months.

As well as unlimited usage, subscribers also receive free setup, free online storage, a SuperHub router and internet security features.  

According to ISPreview, the 50Mb package can be purchased without a phone service, although this costs a standard price of £28.50 per month.

It is the latest move by Virgin Media to draw interest in its broadband deals, with the company having already begun investing £3 billion in its cable network; the largest investment in any British broadband system for more than ten years, representing a major challenge to BT.

The plan includes spending £75 million to enable a further 150,000 homes in Manchester to access ultrafast broadband.
