Virgin Media offers faster average download speeds than any other broadband provider, new research has found.
According to analysis by ISPreview.co.uk, the average download speed offered by the company is now 54.7Mbps.
This compares with 50.9Mbps a year ago and is well above the industry-wide average of 28.21Mbps.
AAISP came second in the rankings, as it now offers average download speeds of 40.6Mbps, while IDNet's average of 33.2Mbps was enough to secure third place.
Commenting on the findings, ISPreview.co.uk said Virgin Media has scored highly partly because it has a greater proportion of superfast and ultrafast connections than other providers.
Indeed, the publication said companies in this situation will "usually score higher because their performance will outweigh the results from customers on slower connectivity methods or packages".
As a result, "they tend to pull ahead of others".
ISPreview.co.uk added that the overall rise in average fixed line broadband download speeds has been driven by the "ongoing migration of consumers from older ADSL lines and on to newer fibre broadband services".
