One Direction missed out on Best Group at the Virgin Media Awards, being pipped by The Wanted by just 0.08 per cent of the vote.

The X Factor boy band - who took the world by storm in 2012 - led the poll for most of the way, however a late rally from their pop rivals saw One D miss out.

More than one million entertainment fans cast their votes in the Virgin Media Awards, naming their most popular films, TV shows, music and games.

Rhianna lost out to Justin Bieber in the Best Solo Artist category, while Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbit was named Next Big Thing.

Dynamo won the TV Show Of The Year award, edging out Sherlock and Doctor Who, while BBC One held onto the title of Channel Of The Year.

Snow White and The Huntsman claimed 34 per cent of the vote to clinch Best Movie, while Kristen Stewart was named Hottest Actress.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops II fended off competition from Fifa ’13 and Halo 4 to win Console Game of the Year, and Angry Birds in Space claimed Best Smartphone Game 2012.

Nick Forward, Editor-in-Chief of Digital Entertainment at Virgin Media, said the awards were "as exciting as ever", giving fans their say on what's hot in the world of entertainment.
